Quality Control

People frequently question why people buy what they call, a "$50 tee shirt." It's much more than that; these brands, creative minds if you may, are sharing their artistic visions. Sure, "street wear", whatever you may call it, may fall short of traditional fashion practices. But, it's about the art; cut, sewn, hand dyed, it's all a part of the creation of this "$50 tee shirt," the creation of the piece. While some of these pieces may seem quite bland, they're often counterbalanced by a shot at pop culture, provoking a strong message.  For these artists and designers, a blank canvas just happens to be a piece of fabric. These artists are pushing the boundaries of creativity, Quality Control.

A short while back I drove up to Bridgeport, Connecticut to check out an in-store event happening at Dertbag. Dertbag and it's creative mind, Philip Post, turns minimalism and sun-kissed tie-dye. You can read more about my visit to the shop and Phil himself here: 1 | 2

The Freedminds is a clothing brand founded in San Francisco. FMFU, or FreedMinds Fuck U, incorporates everything from Wu-Tang Clan references, to spins on the renown Misfits skull, all while producing a bootleg of their own brand. They've also collaborated with brands such as The Divinities and Death Precision. Contributing to the art and culture these clothing brands have defined, "brick by brick".

Recently, these two brands teamed up with D'emploi for their respective collaborations. D'emploi is a small operation run out of Brooklyn, New York, by Kyle Mosholder. Creating handmade goods on a Depression-era Singer using domestically produced canvas. Everything from bags to hats, he continues to define the true meaning of "handmade".

The collaboration with Dertbag featured hand dyed beach towels, a pyramid panel cap, and a beach tote. The collection, titled the "Dertbag + D'emploi Beach Capsule" , features accents of Philip's signature sun faded dyes, royal blue canvas, leather straps, and copper rivets. Whether you're on a beach or a New York City rooftop, the collection is perfect to layout and soak up some rays.

The Freedminds released the "Mesh Pack" with help thanks to D'emploi. The release featured a handmade mesh backpack and a mesh bucket hat. With both pieces coming in black and white, the brand was keeping in mind the heat of the summer and brightness of the sun. The pieces were lightweight due to material use, and provided protection from those ultraviolet rays; a perfect combination of style and functionality.

Fall In Love with Tuesdays

There's a new reason to fall in love with tuesdays, at least this week that is. We haven't even made it half way through the week, but luckily there has been a few releases to help you taste the weekend sunrise to sunset. Who needs the weekend anyways, right? Here are a few tracks brought to you by Ratking, ILoveMakonnen, Spooky Black, and Lucki Eck$. Weekend or not, these are all musts for your daily rotation, no questions asked. So, give these a listen and why not head into work tomorrow with a hangover:

Wiki x Hak x Sportinglife

The Harlem based hip-hop group Ratking is back at it with a remix of Phantogram's "Fall In Love". This group released one of the best hip-hop records this year hands down, So It Goes. A record that tells a story of life within the New York City streets, and each street corner and mishap reads as a subsequent chapter. More so a rework than a remix, the track shares the trios love for the music they create, coinciding with the lives they live. Even Sportinglife, the producer behind the gritty New York City soundscapes, spits a verse on this track. All in all, they've turned Phantogram's pop hit into yet another raw, emotion provoking, chapter of Ratking. Check out the remix below.

ILoveMakonnen has made it very clear that it is indeed Tuesday. The 25 year old rapper/singer/producer is from LA, but currently resides in Atlanta. His track "Club Going Up On A Tuesday" has just been crafted into a remix with October's Very Own. Drake hops in for a verse and brings us an even greater reason for us all to go into work tomorrow with a hangover.

Spooky Black is an artist that's hard to categorize. Maybe you could fit him in between The Weeknd and Yung Lean, but even that's questionable.  We know he's from Minnesota and wears a du-rag as he  mysteriously roams eerie, snowy forests. He just released his new EP, Leaving EP. This EP will bring you on a journey to find your own magical, murdered out, du-rag and turtle neck combo.

Danny Brown is all over the place lately. Releasing a video for the recent track with Rustie, "Attak", and now hoping on a track with Lucki Eck$, an 18 year old rapper out of Chicago who's been on the rise. Eck$ video for "Ouch Ouch" was actually directed by, and featured, UK artist FKA Twigs. He's come together and teamed up with Danny Brown for "Weightin' On", a heavy hitting track that really defines a new artist. Lucki Eck$ recently released his mixtape BODY HIGH and can be downloaded here.

Bruiser Brigade Takeover

There has been one hip hop collective in particular garnering a lot of attention as of lately, hailing from Detroit, the Bruiser Brigade. The Bruiser Brigade is a rap group formed by Danny Brown consisting of himself, Dopehead, CHIP$, ZelooperZ, TrplBlk Mandingo, and their in-house producer SKYWLKER.

Just a few days ago Scottish producer Rustie teamed up with Danny Brown to release "Attak". The track is definitely a must listen, as it was named best new track by Pitchfork Media. Delivering hard hitting bass and an echoing synth hook, the track seems to create two different energies which compliment the aggressive, yet comical, verses of Danny Brown. Give the track a listen below and pre-order Rustie's upcoming album Green Language here.

Things don't stop there, Danny Brown took to twitter and shared with us that the greatly anticipated Bruiser Brigade album will be released this coming October and will be called Reign Supreme. Even sharing that the Bruisers reached out to people for features, but heard no responses. Who needs features anyways, the Bruiser Brigade is about to bring Detroit to your front yard. The collective has failed to ever disappoint so I'm sure you're already getting anxious. Anxiety set aside, pour yourself a nice glass of lean (with or with our Dr. Pepper) and hope you sleep through August and September. If you think about it, October is right around the corner, especially if that works out for you (sleeping for two months that is). So sit patiently and keep posted for the official release date. The Bruiser Brigade is taking over.
